What is a hydraulic cylinder?
A hydraulic cylinder is a mechanical component that converts hydraulic energy (energy transmitted through a fluid, usually oil) into mechanical energy (linear motion). It mainly consists of a closed cylinder with a piston moving inside it. The piston is connected to a rod or shaft, which moves up or down within the cylinder, depending on the direction of fluid flow.
How does a hydraulic cylinder work?
A hydraulic cylinder is a device that uses hydraulic pressure to generate force and linear motion. It is composed of a cylinder, a plunger and a hole for the fluid outlet. The plunger moves inside the cylinder, generating hydraulic pressure that can be applied to an external object to move it.

For a hydraulic cylinder to work, fluid must be pressed through it. This is achieved with a hydraulic pump, which moves the fluid through a closed circuit. The fluid pressure pushes the plunger forward, expanding the cylinder. This expansion generates a force that is applied to the object that the cylinder is manipulating.
When fluid flow stops, the plunger returns to its original position, reducing the size of the cylinder and releasing the applied force. Hydraulic cylinders can be used in a wide variety of applications, from agriculture to aerospace.
Hydraulic cylinders can also be used to lift and hold objects in place. This is achieved by adjusting the fluid pressure to the desired level, allowing the cylinder to be held in a given position. This same technique can also be used to control the speed at which an object moves.

TYPES OF HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS
There are several types of hydraulic cylinders: the main ones, according to their characteristics, can be simplified into single-acting, double-acting, telescopic and locking.
Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder
They are used when a pushing or pulling force is needed in one direction.
• The hydraulic fluid only acts on one side of the piston, allowing movement in only one direction.
• For return in the opposite direction, they rely on an external force, such as a spring or gravity.
Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinder
They provide hydraulic fluid action in both directions, allowing both advancement and retraction of the piston rod.
• They are more versatile than single acting cylinders and are used in a wide variety of applications.
Telescopic Cylinders
They use a cylinder within a cylinder to increase distance in a single hit.
• They are ideal for applications that require a longer stroke length while maintaining a small retracted length, such as in manufacturing and dump truck applications.
• They can be single or double acting, and double acting may require specialized engineering to maintain constant speeds.
Locking Cylinders
These hydraulic cylinders are designed to sustain a load without having to maintain fluid pressure. This is ideal for holding and locking a load in one position.
